Test and validation of ultrasonic parking systems

Overview
Autonomous driving functions require sensors that properly and accurately perceive the environment. For low speed aided maneuvering and parking, Ultrasonic sensor data is typically required. Ultrasonic sensors are also required to qualify for Autonomous Driving level 2 and play an important role to achieve AD level 3, 4 and 5. Dependability of these sensors is key from a functional and safety perspective, therefore a lot of effort from OEMs goes into homologation and ISO testing of such systems. Moreover, the testing gets more convoluted due to the complex signal chain starting from the preprocessing on the sensor unit to the function algorithms running on the ECU. dSPACE’s solution is to virtualize the proposed test procedures based on simulation Over The Air, as frontloading the end-to-end testing and validation of the ultrasonic sensor system to the lab can help detecting implementation errors in an early stage of development and improve the time to market.
